Getting Started

“The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and starting on the first one.”  – Mark Twain

Starting  my research for my final project, I decided to start with the Alberta Education document about redesign and break off from there. I looked at the Moving Forward with High School Redesign site that builds on what was learned from the High School Flexibility Enhancement Pilot Project and other High School Completion work. On the front page are the Foundation Principles, and assessment listed under it. This is very beneficial for me because this is our school’s focus with redesign. Going through the resources, and school stories,  I started thinking about what we already do at the school and how we can move forward. I will post my brainstorming/mindmap page shortly.

The  Central Alberta Regional Consortium  provide[s] professional development, training and in-service activities to educators and those with a vested interest in the education of children. This website turned out to be another treasure because on it is a link to a PD opportunity Designing Your High School – Creating the Conditions for Student Success. The speakers cover the exact themes and topics I need to help me better understand the possibilities with redesign and what information I can communicate to my admin team. I actually registered for the PD, even though it’s in a city that’s about 2 hours north from where I live.

I know these are only two resources, but I spent a lot of time going through them, and going to other sites with similar topics. Most didn’t really apply to what I’m looking for, but some had links to other sites with some relevant information. Moving forward I am going to look at examples of how assessment redesign practices in Alberta high schools, and continue making connections on my mind-map with what are our school’s current practices and how we can move forward.
